Myself and fellow filmmaker Josh Edwards were asked by a North Wales based camper van company to produce a promo video for their Facebook. We planned a route through North Wales, picked up a van, and spent a week living the ‘van life’. I have to say, I’m sold.
We drove almost 500 miles across North Wales. Mountains, rivers, beaches, good music and good food. We had it all. If only all work trips could be like this!
My personal highlight was deciding to not take the dangerous route up Snowdon, known as Crib Gogh. Usually, this would have been my biggest disappointment of the trip, however I was proud of our safe decision as was indicative of some personal growth I had not noticed. Not too long ago I would have been brash enough to brave the knife edged arête, despite never having done the route before. That would have been reckless. It seems I’ve mature a little.
For the promo we operated on the principle of “it will be as long as it needs to be”. From my background in digital marketing I knew that long form content can perform very well on Facebook if targeted at the right audience. This served us well, as the video reached over 100k people on facebook.

Challenges & Solutions
With our primary obstacle being the wonderful Welsh weather, we were blessed with moody atmospheres for on-the-trail photoshoots.
In addition to the promo video, our client asked for 30 hi-res images for use on social media. These were to be presented within a day of the trip, in order to continue the momentum we gathered with an Instagram story take-over.
Shooting an ambitious promo like this whilst collecting images was a challenge. We definitely could have done with a little more time on the road to get what we wanted.
My hopes for next time include: Crib Goch, rock climbing, South Wales, more sunrises and sunsets, surfing, sunshine, and more people!
I really enjoyed this assignment, and I would be extremely interested in any further opportunities similar to this.
